Biography

David Bailie was born in 1941, in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). His first acting experience was at school in 1952, with amateur production of 'Doctor in the House'. After graduation from school he worked for the Central African Airlines. In 1958, he made his first trip from Rhodesia to England. In 1960 he moved to England and went to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). There he met Terry Hands and Peter James and was invited to join the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. After a year there, he came back to London and joined the National Theatre, then worked for six years with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) at Stratford-Upon-Avon. There he played alongside and understudying Sir Laurence Olivier, and also portrayed Florizel opposite Dame Judi Dench's Perdita in 'A Winter's Tale'.Bailie made his film debut in 1960, in Flame in the Streets (1961), then he haven't had much work in a film for a while. During the early 1970s he worked for Stomu Yamashta at his red Buddha Theatre. It was an unpaid job. Bailie played the lead in a show called 'Raindog', and his role involved him having to do everything from singing and dancing, to performing Martial Arts and doing various gymnastics. There he was seen by director David Maloney and was cast for a part of a forthcoming villain in "Doctor Who" (1963), a cult TV series of the 1970s. After having played a few more parts in film and television, Bailie had a long recess in his acting career. Between 1980 and 1990 he ran a furniture-making business. In 1992 he closed that down and went back to acting. At the same time he became a computer programmer and a professional photographer.In the mid 1990s he made a comeback as a pirate in Cutthroat Island (1995), then played an English Judge in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), and also played a scene opposite Orlando Bloom in Gladiator (2000). Bailie's best known work in film is the role of Cotton, a speechless pirate who has his tongue cut out, so he miraculously trained his parrot, also named Cotton, to read his mind and speak on his behalf. Bailie first appears as Cotton in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) as one of the pirates Jack Sparrow and Josamee Gibbs hire out in Tortuga. He is one of the few Black Pearl crew-members to survive the Kracken attack in the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). Bailie is also billed as Cotton in the third installment of the 'Pirates' franchise Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (2007).David Bailie also emerged as a radio actor. He gave an impressive performance as the mad scientist Taren Capel, a re-incarnation of his famous work from the 60s cult series 'Doctor Who'. His other activities outside of his acting profession include art and photography. David Bailie has been enjoying a happy life with his family and children. He is currently residing in England.

  • Has said in interviews he was the first choice for Davros (Michael Wisher), Creator of The Daleks in Doctor Who: Gensesis Of The Daleks, but choose to do a play instead. He was also thought suitable for the part of Gharman (Dennis Chinnery) in the same story.
